the weekend? meteorologist tim williams has the answer in his first warning weather forecast. eyewitness news saturday morning starts now. good morning, welcome to eyewitness news saturday, i'm gigi barnett. i'm tim williams. temperatures are in the 50s around the region today. >> feels like fall. >> really starting to feel that way. we have less than two weeks now before the season changes and it really is starting to feel that crispness in the air. temperatures in the low 50s, 52 at bwi, we'll have a good full day of a lot of sunshine. we'll have a fair weather clouds early on. the clouds will increase heading into tonight and we will expect to see a little rain tomorrow. your forecast looks like this:

starting off with temperatures in the 50s. the only 60 we see right now is in dc, actually at 60. that's the warmest spot on the map right now. a daytime high of 79 degrees, just about 80. overnight lows in the 50s. we'll have the complete forecast in just a moment. thank you. first here's what people will be talking about today. right now the search for a man who escaped from police custody even though he was handcuffed is on. kelly mcpherson explains she has the latest on search and why the man was under arrest. >> reporter: good morning. police believe palmer stabbed another man four times and then ran away from the scene. they were just about to book and charge him friday afternoon when palmer escaped. >> 32-year-old paul palmer is considered dangerous by police now that he has escaped from officers. he got away while being transported from central district to central booking where he would be processed and charged with attempted murder. >> all i know is when i went to

jail i never got away and they let him get away. that means somebody is losing their jobs. >> reporter: palmer is accused of attempted robbery across from the courthouse and a busy city shelter. the stabbing happened on the 31st, it wasn't until friday that police caught up with the suspect. >> through witness accounts we were able to track him downed the process of charging him with attempted murder. >> reporter: palmer was walking to a wagon and he told officers that his hand hurt. >> the plastic flex cuffs that we commonly use, he was able to maneuver his hand out during the process. >> reporter: was eli ing that he had a hand injury? >> we believe that he fabricated the injury in an attempt to escape police custody. this is not a common occurrence. the individual complained of a medical injury. >> reporter: the investigation will have to wait, now priority number one is finding palmer and getting him back in custody. >> he could do it again, do it again, and again and again if

he gets a chance. i mean, you know, he's dangerous. quicker they find him the better. >> reporter: city police have several officers on the streets looking for this man. palmer does have a criminal history including theft and assault. reporting from city police headquarters kelly mcpherson wjz eyewitness news. baltimore city police are asking anyone who may have seen him to give them a call. a pasadena man is behind bars charged with trying to drag a young woman from the b and a trail and trying to rape her. 21-year-old michael johnson was arrested. a neighbor called after hearing a woman scream. a 20-year-old woman told them a man grabbed her from behind and tried to pull her into the woods. shortly after they found johnson who detectives say had condoms and a knife on him at the time. johnson is being held on $750,000 bond. the florida pastor who sparked a nationwide debate over his plan to burn the consider ron is in new york city.

reverend terry jones arrived in new york, saying he wants to meet with the imam. the reverend's son said the church will not follow through with plans to burn the muslim holy book to mark the anniversary of 9/11. at the site of the ground zero in new york, many will gather today to remember those killed in the attacks on the world trade center. the name of every victim will be read aloud at a park near ground zero. a national september 11th memorial will be at ground zero. alley plans to lay a wreath at the fallen warrior memorial in reisterstown. toe son university will place 3000 flags. and other events in risers town

and dundalk. a grim search is underway in california, police confirmed four people are dead, and crews are searching for more victim. sandra hughes reports from san bruno, california. >> reporter: in the rubble where dozens of houses burned to the ground, the search for answers is just beginning. investigators want to know what caused an underground gas pipe to rupture and explode into flames thursday evening. >> it felt like an earthquake, kept shaking and shaking all of a sudden i herd a sssss sound. and then all of a sudden, an explosion. >> reporter: pat made it out with her purse and her dog running from an inferno. the flames reached ten stories high in is in rating homes, cars, everything in their path. at least four people were killed. another 50 suffered burns and other injuries. fire crews are going house to house making sure all the

victims have been found. all of the residents accounted for. >> we have completed 75% of the property on initial search with the rescue dogs. the other 25% of the residences are still too hot to enter. >> reporter: some neighborhood residents say they reported the smell of gas before the explosion. officials questioned them about that at these press conferences all day. pacific gas and electric says its checking into those claims. >> 37 homes were destroyed. pat did not know if hers was one of them. >> we have 47 years in that house. it's hard. >> reporter: a state of emergency has been declared to help speed up government aid to the victims. sandra hughes, cbs news, san bruno, california. >> a team of investigators from the ntsb is on the scene. they will oversee the investigation to make sure it is handled properly. the campaign treasury for

curry has been indicted on theft charges. according to the 15 count indictment, olivia harris is accused of stealing more than $150,000 from curry's campaign account between 2007 and 2009. she faces a maximum sentence of $25,000 fine or 25 years behind bars. the state prosecutor says there is no indications curry was aware of the scheme. curry was indicted on unrelated charges of bribery, conspiracy and extortion involving his work with a grocery store chain in baltimore. justin bieber's sold out performance is making headlines. ed norris posted this video on 105.7 the fan website showing what he says is bieber throwing water balloons back stage. some of those balloons reportedly hit maryland state troopers. no word if he will be in trouble but it's unlikely he will be charged with a crime.

the nfl regular season is underway. that means ravens football fans are anxious to show off their purple passion. yesterday officially marked the return of purple fridays. >> this is a call to action, a beat ravens' fans know. it's how to kickoff the season's first purple friday. that means one thing. >> football is back. >> so are the purple camos. >> happy purple friday. >> ravens cheerleaders, and mascot visited high tops bar and grill to pump up fans to doned purple. they brought the ravens banned from sun up to sun down, some fans tagged along for it all. >> one thing is we know their names, they know ours, every cheerleader and play maker, that's truth. >> not only do we get feed off of it, but the players love seeing the fans and seeing the excitement around town. >> for some fans the start of

humidity 83%, high barometer, high pressure in control, 30.03, that is rising. across the state and down toward the south, dc is the warmest spot at 60 degrees. we do have 40s out there this morning. 45 in cumberland, 45 in coke land, 54 in hagerstown, 53 on the shore, 57 toward pax river with the winds coming in from the southwest at just around 5 miles per hour. calm readings around most of the state. it will be a pretty delightful day. not half as much cloud cover as yesterday. we didn't have any rain in the forecast. we had a lot of clouds out there. low pressure offshore kicking back moisture into the region. what we're watching a built of dynamic, low pressure associated cold front moving in from the west. it's going to lift across the region tomorrow. we'll start to see clouds thicken tonight. tomorrow we'll see showers off and on. not really a lot of rain with

this. we'll probably see maybe a tenth of an inch out of this, you know area wide that will be the average. we don't have a washout of your day. it will be dreary. behind it, dry weather moves in as high pressure builds right back in going into monday. this weather of course affects every one from baltimore right up to philadelphia, into new york. again, where the ravens are playing we can should see nice weather. weather should not be a factor for the game. keeping an eye on tropical storm igor. 69 miles per hour winds. we are watching this, it is expected to take a bit of a turn toward the north and it's going to be eventually heading in our general direction. and the national hurricane center has projected this to be a category three hurricane over the next week or so. this is projected out to thursday, but because it's a category three is a major hurricane, we are going to keep a close eye on the storm although it is still several

welcome back to eyewitness news saturday morning. it is just around 18 minutes after the hour on this 11th day of september. we're looking at a pretty nice day shaping up. not quite as cloudy and warmer than yesterday. 77 degrees yesterday. temperatures closer to 80 today. we have rain progressing moving into the region. we have high pressure moving off into the ocean and low pressure moving into the region. we do have much needed rain on the way, but we're not expecting a lot out of this, probably a tenth of an inch area wide. that will be scattered over the day. scattered showers, nothing going to washout your plans. won't be the prettiest of sundays. today the better of the two weekend days. temperatures in the 50s. a daytime high of 79 to 80 degrees or so. overnight lows in the upper 50s. the five day forecast is coming up in a few minutes. thank you. first back to some other stories people will be talking about today. a new report on july's deadly

duck boat crash, shows distress calls from the tour boat went unanswered. the preliminary report says attempts were made to contact the barge. the barge struck the duck boat and killed two passengers. drug and alcohol tests on the tug boat's crews were negative. crews until to battle a wild fire in colorado that destroyed 200 homes and forced thousands to evacuate. the blaze is 50% contained and they hope to have the fire fully contained by early next week. about 1000 people are still waiting to return to their homes. a devastating mud slide hits a scene i can coastal town in southern italy. this video shows the flooding mud covering the central plaza. it happened after a nearby river suddenly broke through its banks after a heavy rainfall. one person remains missing as rescue crews are going through the rubble and mud covered streets. most people have fond

the 50s. great time to take a break from the ac if you're able to put the windows up and enjoy the overnight lows and cool the house down. this is the week to do it. okay. during the school day a lot of children loves chips, snacks and sweets, some schools are rethinking what they serve for lunch. as suzanne collins reports, this weekly cool produce is on the menu at maryland schools. >> reporter: a local farmer comes to edgewood elementary school to teach students corn doesn't start in a plastic bag or a can. >> the students shuck corn and many have never done that. maurice jones farm is 1 mile from the school. >> this is the feed corn. >> reporter: the farm to school lunch week is a time for students to learn about agriculture and taste fresh produce, apples and corn on the cob is not what people are used to eating. >> i have hamburgers, chips if i have money on my account, and french fries. >> the purpose is to get local

fruits and vegetables into our schools so our children can taste what real fruits and vegetables take like and it's to help our local economy. >> reporter: that this program helps students and local farmers who found a big market for their produce. >> i think it could eventually build to being good money for the farms. the stuff doesn't have to be shipped. >> reporter: for many years schools used the federal government military food distribution system to get food to schools. that makes it hard for local farmers to compete. but a new view of nutrition and buying local is turning that around. >> at home what are your favorite foods? >> corn and fruit. >> reporter: what about potato chips? >> i don't eat them that much. >> reporter: students also learn about wool, horse saddles, the deputy superintendent dresses as banana. it gets them to recognize that they can eat great stuff. they can satisfy their sweet tooth with fruits and vegetables. >> reporter: will peaches and

11 best days of summer. well those days continue even after labor day and into this weekend. calm waters there, no advisory on the water. boaters having a nice weekend. everyone else the same. 79 degrees today, plenty of sunshine on this day. overnight lows around 59. we'll see clouds increase heading toward midnight and potentially a shower very, very late. showers extend into tomorrow. rather cloudy all hoe there will not be a washout of your day, it won't be quite as warm as today either. we will see scattered showers throughout the day. we'll have your complete forecast in a few moments. thank you. first here's what we'll will be talking about today. the florida preacher who created an international up roar over his plans to burn the koran today says it won't happen. instead he has made a trip to new york city to mark the 9/11 terror attacks. this saga appears to be far from over. >> reporter: terry jones arrived in new york city on the eve of the september 11th

commemoration. it is not clear whether anyone involved in the project near ground zero was willing to meet with him. the trip capped off two days in which jones went from planning to burn copies of the koran to cancelling the event to postponing it now. >> there will nobody koran burning, tomorrow 6:00 as planned. >> reporter: the florida preacher originally announced he would stop the koran burning because he believed the imam in new york had agreed to move the location of the islamic cultural center. but the imam stated he has no plans to meet with jones, won't barter and apparently won't take his calls. >> we would like to make an announcement and like i said give a challenge to the in new york. >> the jones asked imam to phone him back. >> as of this time we have not heard from him, but we are very hopeful. >> president obama said burning the koran goes against american freedom of religion and interest. >> this kind of behavior or

threats of action put our young men and women in harm's way. >> in gainesville, several religious groups called on jones not to burn copies of the muslim holy book including one saying it has the signatures from thousands of people from 90 countries who are against this plan. as for reverend jones, his next move is anyone's guess. in gainesville, florida, wjz eyewitness news. >> a proposed mosque or muslim cultural center is expected to provide a more political tone to this year's remembrance of the september 11th attacks. the name of every victim will be read aloud at a park near ground zero today. after the ceremony activists on both sides of the mosque issue will stage rallies nearby. more than 2000 people showed up for a 9/11 vigil near ground zero last night. organizers say they wanted to avoid including the mosque controversy in that observance. and the investigation

continues today after a deadly gas explosion near san francisco killed several people. firefighters say a gas line ruptured thursday night causing a blaze that destroyed dozens of homes. police confirmed the blast killed four people and injured at least 50 others. federal investigators are looking at the pipeline's condition and installing safeguards to make sure pressure doesn't build up again. the search is on this morning for an attempted murder suspect who escaped from baltimore city police custody. 32-year-old paul palmer is accused of stabbing someone four times last month in the 200 block of davis street. police tracked palmer down and arrested him last night, but officers say he got away while being transported to central booking. >> the plastic flex cuffs that we commonly use and he was able to maneuver his hand out. >> was eli ing that he had a hand injury. >> we believe he fabricated the injury in an attempt to escape.

>> several officers are now outlooking for palmer and the victim of the attack survived it. we are learning more about a shooting that left a harford county man in serious condition. the gunfire broke out in the 800 block of fisherman's line 5:30 thursday night. the victim is 20-year-old cody williams of aberdeen. he underwent surgery at bayview medical center. a person of interest is being detained but the investigation is still ongoing. three people are behind bars this morning accused of stabbing a man in baltimore county. police say the attack happened in the 1100 block of reisterstown road early thursday morning. investigators say the victim was stabbed in the chest and arm. he was taken to shock trauma and right now his condition is still unknown. the final push is underway in the most contentious primary battle for baltimore city state's attorney in decades. race and crime prevention strategies have become volatile issues and with 15 year

incumbent fighting to keep her job. mike hellgren hit the campaign trail with both, who both got big endorsements. >> reporter: patricia jessieme has not faced a battle like this in years. >> it's a strategy in baltimore city people are getting away with murder. >> since jessime took over, violent crime is down 50%. >> even lending her campaign $100,000 to keep up with greg bernstein's fund raising. >> i was raised in mississippi during the '60s, the '50s and the '60s, so know this has not been the toughest thing i've ever encountered and will probably not be the toughest thus. >> reporter: comments she made about that era and her opponent have drawn criticism that she is injecting race. >> and if he is elected he will be taking us back 60 years. >> reporter: she says what she

meant was bernstein does not support crime prevention programs, not that he would target black residents for prosecution. >> shame on them for interjecting something that had no relevance at all to what i was saying. >> some people are interpreting it that way and i just again think it does a disservice to the citizens of baltimore to suggest they should make their decision about who should be the next state's attorney based on a color of a person's skin. >> reporter: bernstein says he does indeed belief in prevention and treatment but through other agencies which he would partner with. >> it is the job of the state's attorney's office to focus resources on prosecuting violent criminals. that's where we'll devote attorneys. >> reporter: he is criticized for conviction rate and leadership. >> too many young people are dying sense leslie on our streets, but we are making progress and that progress needs to continue. >> reporter: both candidates just got big endorsements bernstein from the baltimore sun and jessime from the

boston. like migrate uncle if you can't win yourself, mess it up for everybody else. i like it! she never knows what to do. >> i don't. do i talk to you or not say anything? let's talk about weather, how about that? >> we can talk that. a very nice weekend is shaping up, at least the early part of it. it starts to get cloudy and damp into the latter part. we need the rain and we'll get a little bit, 53 degrees right now our temperature at bwi. and 48 the dew point, relative humidity 83%, calm winds around central maryland with a high barometer at 30.03. that will continue to rise until late tonight and tomorrow with a low pressure system approaching, things will change a little bit and only for a short time. 53 degrees right now in ocean city. we have 56 in elkton across the state over to the western edge, temperatures fluctuating a little bit. 45 in oakland and cumberland at

our last check. 43 in the cumberland valley and across the state temperatures are fluctuating as high as 60 toward dc and the dc suburbs. right now the winds are coming in from the northwest in washington. a bit of a southwest flow near pax river. and we see a lot of calm readings across the state. 3 miles per hour winds toward oakland everyone else light winds or no winds at all at least starting off this morning. we're watching here low pressure moving in from the great lakes region and across the midwest. what we will see lift august cross the region shower activity, much of the heavier energy and these showers will lift north and wii. we really don't get a lot out of this. projections maybe a tenth of an inch out of this. but it will be widely scattered. we have very dry air in place right now. it will take a little for the moisture to penetrate the atmosphere. as it lifts through, we'll start to see the clouds increase late tonight with a chance of a shower late tonight into

tomorrow. warmer air stays with us for that time and then we cool down. the rain cools the air down. we'll go into the low 70s tomorrow, dry air, high pressure builds in behind it and then we go into the rest of the week after tomorrow with a very nice stretch. again temperatures and conditions much like we had this past week. we are really making that turn. igor is a tropical storm. the winds are picked up. 69 miles per hour winds at 74 it becomes a hurricane. this storm is projected to become a category 3 storm which is a major storm. and the projected cone of movement takes it up to the north and just a little bit to the northwest, which is going to bring it a little closer to some mainland concerns and some island interests down toward hispaniola and toward cuba. we'll keep an eye on this, a week and a half away from any landfall if any at all. we'll keep you posted on this. igor is a category 3 we have to keep a close eye on it. the only activity in the

drug cartels. 40 prison guards and staff were arrested who were on duty at the time of the escape. two prison guards are missing at this time. kansas city, kansas a man is in custody after a wild chase involving a stolen bus. the bus caught on fire and police arrested steven dawnell. he forced the driver off the empty bus and drove it on to the interstate and city streets. a warning today for wegman's supermarket customers, the company has stopped selling the reusable green bay and holiday packages here, testing showed elevated levels of lead. customers are asked not to throw them away but bring them to the store for proper disposal. a museum in spain has unveiled a fossil of a newly discovered dinosaur. scientists believe it lived

baltimore's infamous highway to know where has begun. >> members of the affected communities say they're excited for what will take its place. >> reporter: as west baltimore resident john hayley took his turn demolishing the highway to nowhere, he prayed this day would come. >> i hope and i believe. >> construction began on i170 known as the highway to nowhere back in 1974. it was meant to connect downtown with i-70, it displaced nearly 700 families and placed a barrier between neighborhoods. community opposition stopped construction after only one and a half miles were complete. >> it kept the community divided physically and mentally. >> it was an era at the time, it was an era that today we begin to correct. >> reporter: governor martin alley also took part in the day along with mayor stephanie rawlings-blake. >> at one time there were

connections here. at one time there was not this barrier. >> once cleared of this blight we can begin to dramatic renewal and transformation that will make these neighborhoods better. >> reporter: once the highway is gone, the southwest neighborhoods of west baltimore will not be separated anymore from the northwest neighborhoods. all of this concrete will be grass. >> that will be phase one. phase two will include two new parking lots for the west baltimore marc station and reconnecting payson street between west franklin and west mulberry street. >> as people match the barrier that once divided them come down, they look forward to growing their community. >> give people the sense that there is some hope. andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. the demolition is expected to be complete in the summer of 2011. >> the entire project will cost about $9 million paid for with federal and city money. >> wow, it's been there as long as i can remember.

the answer in his first warning weather forecast. >> reporter: i'm mike schuh in front of the science center, those are dragon boats skipping across the harbor, we'll tell you what more when eyewitness news continues. good morning, welcome back to eyewitness news saturday morning, i'm gigi barnett. >> i'm tim williams on this 11th day of september. it's 7:00. a nice day shaping up, much like yesterday, just a little warmer and a little more sunshine, a lot more sunshine actually. this is a gorgeous sunrise. yesterday we had quite a bit of cloud cover out there, although the temperatures were very mild, we got to 77. a few degrees warmer today, closer to 80 degrees. with all the clear sky it will

feel a little warmer with the sun on your skin. so we're looking at temperatures starting off in the upper 50s to about 60 degrees area wide. our daytime high gets up to 79, with overnight lows in the 50s with clouds increasing and rain arriving by about dawn. we'll talk about the timing of it all and what it means for the rest of the weekend in your complete forecast. first, here's what people will be talking about today, right now the search is on for man who escaped from police custody even though he was handcuffed is on. kelly mcpherson explains she has the latest on search and why the man was under arrest. >> reporter: good morning. police believe palmer stabbed another man four times and then ran away from the scene. they were just about to book and charge him friday afternoon when palmer escaped. >> 32-year-old paul palmer is considered dangerous by police now that he has escaped from officers. he got away while being transported from central district to central booking where he would be processed and charged with attempted murder.

>> all i know is when i went to jail i never got away and they let him get away. that means somebody is losing their jobs doesn't it? >> reporter: palmer is accused of attempted robbery across from the courthouse and a busy city shelter. the stabbing happened on the thirty-first. it wasn't until friday that police caught up with the suspect. >> through witness accounts we were able to track him downed the process of charging him with attempted murder. >> reporter: palmer was walking to a wagon and he told officers that his hand hurt. they brought him back into the lobby. >> the plastic flex cuffs that we commonly use, he was able to maneuver his hand out during the process. >> reporter: was he faking that he had a hand injury? >> we believe that he fabricated the injury in an attempt to escape police custody. this is not a common occurrence. the individual complained of a medical injury. so we have an obligation to treat that. >> reporter: the investigation will have to wait, now priority number one is finding palmer and getting him back in custody.

>> he could do it again, do it again, and again and again if he gets a chance. i mean, you know, he's dangerous. quicker they find him the better. >> reporter: city police have several officers on the streets looking for this man. palmer does have a criminal history including theft and assault. reporting from city police headquarters kelly mcpherson wjz eyewitness news. baltimore city police are asking anyone who may have seen him to give them a call. the florida pastor who sparked a nationwide debate over his plan to burn the koran is in new york city. the church will not follow through to burn the koran. at the site of ground zero, many will gather today to remember those killed in the attacks on the world trade center. the name of every victim will be read aloud at a park near

ground zero. there is progress being made on the building at the former twin towers. thousands of people around maryland will take time to remember those killed in the 9/11 attacks. the governor plans to lay a wreath at the faller warrior memorial in reisterstown to honor those who died on the war on terror. towson university will place 3000 flags on campus. and reisterstown festival events will take place and heritage park in dundalk and the investigation continues today after a deadly gas explosion near san francisco killed several people. firefighters say a gas line ruptured thursday night causing a blaze that destroyed dozens of homes. police confirmed the blast killed four people and injured at least 50 others. the search is on this

>> reporter: in the rubble where dozens of houses burned to the ground, the search for answers is just beginning. investigators want to know what caused an underground gas pipe to rupture and explode into flames thursday evening. >> it felt like an earthquake, kept shaking and shaking all of a sudden i herd a sssss sound. and then all of a sudden, an explosion. >> reporter: pat made it out with her purse and her dog running from an inferno. the flames reached ten stories . high, burning homes cars, everything in their path. at least four people were killed. another 50 suffered burns and other injuries. fire crews are going house to house making sure all the victims have been found. all of the residents accounted for. >> we have completed 75% of the property on initial search with the rescue dogs. the other 25% of the residences are still too hot to enter. >> reporter: some neighborhood residents say they reported the smell of gas before the explosion. officials questioned them about that at these press conferences all day. pacific gas and electric says its checking into those claims.

>> 37 homes were destroyed. pat did not know if hers was one of them. >> we have 47 years in that house. it's hard. >> reporter: a state of emergency has been declared to help speed up government aid to the victims. sandra hughes, cbs news, san bruno, california. >> a team of investigators from the ntsb is on the scene. they will oversee the investigation to make sure it is handled properly. the campaign treasury for currie has been indicted on theft charges. according to the 15 count indictment, olivia harrisarris is accused of stealing more than $150,000 from currie's campaign account between 2007 and 2009. she faces a maximum sentence of $25,000 fine or 25 years behind bars. the state prosecutor says there is no indications currie was aware of the scheme. currie was indicted on unrelated charges of bribery, conspiracy and extortion involving his work with a grocery store chain in baltimore.

the nfl regular season is underway. that means ravens football fans are anxious to show off their purple passion. yesterday officially marked the return of purple fridays. >> this is a call to action, a beat ravens' fans know. it's how to kickoff the season's first purple friday. that means one thing. >> football is back. >> so are the purple camos. >> happy purple friday. >> ravens cheerleaders, and mascot visited high tops bar and grill to pump up fans to doned purple. they brought the ravens band too from sun up to sun down, some fans tagged along for it all. >> one thing is we know their names, they know ours, every cheerleader and play maker, that's truth. >> not only do we get feed off of it, but the players love seeing the fans and seeing the excitement around town.

with that high pressure we are seeing a lot of sunshine, blue skies, hardly a cloud anywhere. that will actually help to dry up much of the rain trying to move in. it will not have an easy time making it to the ground. that plays into our forecast in a positive way as far as events are concerned. we have 45 in oakland, 43 in cumberland, 53 in elkton 53 at the shore, winds from the west at 5 miles per hour. calm readings across the state. as the rain comes in from two separate areas, low pressure pushing across the great lakes region, this area of low down around the carolinas, moving across kentucky and tennessee, it's all going to converge over our region. this is going to fizzle out and dry out. you see much of this energy up across the upper peninsula of michigan and wisconsin lifting north. it is really this area right here that we'll be watching kind of moving in a northeasterly fashion across our area. as it does, again, high pressure is going to ease off, but the

air is very dry. we'll be watching that, but widely scattered showers and again no washout of your plans. we're keeping an eye on igor, a tropical storm with winds up to now 69 miles per hour. igor will move north. and make a turn as a category 3 hurricane. while it is still a week and a half from any land interest at all, even down toward the caribbean islands, we'll watch this because it will be a very strong storm strengthening as it moves into warm waters in the atlantic. 7:21 sunset. next high tide at fort mchenry is 9:09, ten to 125 knots on the bay. plenty of sun, average is 80. we're right on target. mainly cloud see cloudy toward dawn. not as warm as today tomorrow. 79, 80, 76 and 76 for the rest of the week. and we're looking at overnight lows in the mid 50s.

thank you. first back to some other stories people will be talking about today. crews continue to battle a wild fire in colorado that destroyed 200 homes and forced thousands to evacuate. the blaze is 50% contained and they hope to have the fire fully contained by early next week. about 1000 people are still waiting to return to their homes. most people have fond memories, childhood memories of ponies, some senior citizens in southern new jersey don't need to reminisce. because sampson, the kissing pony visits them at different retirement homes in the area. these lucky senior citizens, pet the 300-pound pony while he kisses whoas away. sporting his rubber bootie, sampson brings love to these residents each week. cute. it is time once again for the annual dragon boat races at the inner harbor. >> the event is for a good cause. wjz is live with mike schuh for all the fun. mike, i like your term, you said

>> the muslim holy book will not be burned today in honor of the anniversary of nine, 11. the reverend explained why he wanted to burn the koran in the first place. >> as we were trying to make a very radical statement to a very radical element of islam. >> and while in new york, jones says he wants to meet with the imam in charge of a proposed muslim cultural center near ground zero. the controversy of that cultural center is expected to provide a political tone to the remembrance of the september 11th attacks. the name of every victim of the 9/11 attacks will be read aloud at a park today. activists on both sides of the mosque issue will stage rallies. 2000 people showed up for a 9/11 vigil near ground zero last night. organizers wanted to avoid including the mosque controversy in that observance. emergency responders have been running in the united

states to commemorate the events of 9/11. kai jackson reports that the group called tour of duty stopped in baltimore because of the 9/11 connection. >> reporter: red lights enveloped runners who made their way up southwest baltimore, a group called tour of duty on a mission for september 11thment they were at the ambulance company in frederick county monday, on thursday they were at loyola university. >> i want people to never forget what happened that horrible day. these people were murdered that day. >> reporter: nearly 3000 americans died on september 11th when terrorists crashed commercial jets into several targets including the world trade center in new york and the pentagon in virginia. tour of duty is running across the country raising money and awareness for first responders who die in the line of duty. bag pipes playing). >> the runners assemble for a ceremony at loyola's memorial

32-year-old paul palmer is accused of stabbing someone four times last month in the 200 block of davis street. police tracked palmer down and arrested him last night, but officers say he got away while being transported to central booking. states. he reportedly faked an injury to distract officers. >> the plastic flex cuffs that we commonly use and he was able to maneuver his hand out. >> was he lying that he had a hand injury. >> we believe he fabricated the injury in an attempt to escape. >> police say several officers are outlooking for palmer, the victim of the stabbing palmer is accused of did survive that attack. three people are behind bars this morning accused of stabbing a man in baltimore county. police say the attack happened in the 1100 block of reisterstown road early thursday morning. investigators say the victim was stabbed in the chest and arm. he was taken to shock trauma and right now his condition is still unknown.

the final push is underway in the most contentious primary battle for baltimore city state's attorney in decades. race and crime prevention strategies have become volatile issues and with 15 year incumbent fighting to keep her job. mike hellgren hit the campaign trail with jessamy and greg bernstein who both got big endorsements this week. >> reporter: patricia jessamy has not faced a battle like this in years. >> it's a strategy in baltimore city people are getting away with murder. because patricia jessamy fails to convict them. >> since jessamy took over, violent crime is down 50%. >> even lending her campaign $100,000 to keep up with greg bernstein's fund raising. >> i was raised in mississippi during the '60s, the '50s and the '60s, so know this has not been the toughest thing i've ever encountered and will probably not be the toughest thus far. >> reporter: comments she made about that era and her opponent

have drawn criticism that she is injecting race. this is from a recent debate. >> and if he is elected he will be taking us back 60 years. >> reporter: she says what she meant was bernstein does not support crime prevention programs, not that he would target black residents for prosecution. >> shame on them for interjecting something that had no relevance at all to what i was saying. >> some people are interpreting it that way and i just again think it does a disservice to the citizens of baltimore to suggest they should make their decision about who should be the next state's attorney based on a color of a person's skin. >> reporter: bernstein says he does indeed believe in prevention and treatment but through other agencies which he would partner with. >> it is the job of the state's attorney's office to focus resources on prosecuting violent criminals. that's where we'll devote attorneys. our attention. >> reporter: he is criticized for conviction rate and leadership. >> too many young people are dying sense senselessly on our

but there is a very calm morning around much of the state. you see calm readings, zero registering on the map. what we have are a few different disturbances around the area, one toward kentucky and tennessee, this is fizzling out. this low across the great lakes region and the associated cold front will move across. look had how this breaks up. much has lifted to the north and northwest. we'll get the middle portion of that lifting across the region moving north and northeast. as it does a lot of it will hit the high pressure in control here now. it will take a little bit for that moisture to penetrate the dry air we have in place. what's left of it will bring clouds across the region and widely scattered showers. no washout of any plans for tomorrow and then after it moves through, dryer air moves in place and then we start another week of very nice conditions, blue skies and sunshine. we're watching igor which is a tropical storm, with sustained winds at 60 miles per hour,

what or who was tommy john, it is a surgical procedure that come people need. >> you've heard about it with washington nationals pitcher steven straussburg. dr. bill howard is here to

explain the surgery. kept hearing about it, nobody explained it. >> today is the day. >> we have a couple questions we want to answer. lately we've heard about it as tim mentioned. it's a surgery that's on the own collateral ligament. >> well, what it is, it's the ligament on the inside of the elbow which stabilizes the elbow and holds it together. >> what happens to it. >> well, pitching over hand is unnatural. excuse me. and it's strains this and often it tears the ligament. the arm becomes unstable. >> is this an injury that only pitchers have? >> usually pitchers, but it can be catchers, out fielders and even quarterbacks can have this injury. >> it's anybody with that over hand motion. >> even josi canseco had tommy john surgery. he pitched one inning, tore it out. >> that is incredible. >> so why is it called tommy

john? >> tommy john was a pitcher for the la dodgers. i'm dying today. and in 1974 his arm went. dr. frank jobe said, you know, you are through, but let's try something. they tried it, it worked. ever since then tommy john surgery. >> how common is it? >> it's so common that 10% of all the active pitchers in the major leagues have had this surgery. >> wow. >> nine pitchers in the all star game this year had it done. >> that's a lot. >> is it a career ending, people come back from it? >> tommy john came back and won 160 games after the surgery. it really doesn't stop you anymore. in fact, it may make you a little stronger. >> is it done through scope, is it very invasive, how is it done? >> it's done, let me tear this out here.

>> ewww. >> it's done not through the scope. it's an open procedure. you take a tendon from the wrist or the foot or the hamstring and you thread it between the two bones in the elbow. and tie it together, and it strengthens it, game over. >> are there a lot of -- what are the dangers? >> not much, if you protect the ulnar nerve, which is a big nerve, you're okay. it is not a dangerous surgery. >> $6 million man used to be on tv, we are rebuilding people and making them better, stronger faster. >> even high school kids are saying make me stronger, let's have it done now before i get hurt. >> unbelievable. that's a great explanation, dr. bill. hopefully we don't see anybody on our team, our bird teams with that injury. >> only if you get it by -- >> that is so cool. dr. bill, thank you so much for being here. >> thank you. good to see you. >> we'll be right back with the
